It's probably safe to say that Matt Reeves' The Batman is one of the more anticipated movies on the horizon, and based on everything we've seen so far, Reeves and company have been cooking up something very special. The film stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, who is in his second year of fighting crime as Batman. He uncovers corruption in Gotham City that connects back to his own family, all while facing off against a serial killer known as the Riddler (Paul Dano).
The Batman also stars Jeffrey Wright as Gotham City Police Department's James Gordon, and while the actor naturally couldn't spill too many details, he did toss out a few adjectives to THR when asked to describe the project.
It was gothic. It was sleuthful if that’s a word. It was mysterious, and it was tricky. It was tricky because of the conditions that we were working in. It was isolating for those of us who were away from home, out of the country, over in London. I experienced more quarantines than I would wish on anyone, going back and forth over the last six months. So it was a pretty dogged one to try to pull off. We were working in the teeth of the outbreak, and we were trying to protect ourselves, one another and the production. So it took a lot.
Jeffrey Wright continued, "But what I will say about it too is that it was really gratifying because we all unified around that purpose of doing our jobs, making this film, protecting one another, and getting through it together. And we did. I think we made a brilliant movie, and we did it as a collective that came together as one. I wish we would do a bit more of that in this country right now to get through this thing. But at the very least, I know we did it on that film set, so I know it can be done if the will is there." In addition to Robert Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright, and Paul Dano, The Batman also stars Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Andy Serkis as Alfred, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson, Barry Keoghan as GCPD Officer Stanley Merkel, and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot. Wright's description of "sleuthful" adds to Matt Reeve's comments over a year ago that The Batman will finally do justice to Batman's reputation as the world's greatest detective, something many fans, including myself, have longed to see.
The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4, 2022.
