THE BOX has always seemed like an ideal DVD experience to me. Intriguing but, thanks to a combination of mixed-to-bewildered reviews and my own ambivalence regarding Richard Kelly, not a must-see right out of the gate. It came and went with nary an impression theatrically ($15 million all told), but perhaps it can find an audience in people’s homes, not unlike Kelly’s DONNIE DARKO. (His SOUTHLAND TALES remains a movie only he understands; although I know my homey Jared digs it… For some reason.)
THE BOX hits home video on FEBRUARY 23rd. Perhaps the coolest supplement on the DVD is an interview with Richard Matheson, the reclusive writer of the short story THE BOX is based on. The Blu-Ray release will include that, along with a commentary by director Richard Kelly, featurettes (“The Box: Grounded in Reality”, “Visual Effects Revealed”), a Music Video Prequels feature, a digital copy, and a copy of the standard DVD… So obviously, if you want to look inside the entire box, you’ll need a Blu-Ray player.
