So a few details have surfaced regarding the reboot of THE CROW (a premise ranging from superfluous to blasphemous depending on how big a fan you are, just ask our boy Jared P.), a project still a couple months from being green-lit.
It seems producer Ryan Kavanaugh has sat down with the peeps at i09 to promote his new film BROTHERS, and in so doing shed some shine on his next project, which despite having a “great script” by Stephen Norrington (who directed BLADE, and will direct the new CROW) is still largely bereft of above and below the line talent. So what do we know?
Well, we know for sure the flick is an out-and-out relaunch rather than a remake of the infamous 1994 flick, and that casting for the new installment is still in the discussion stage of the game. But don’t take my word, take Kavanaugh’s:
“We’re looking. We’re in discussions….I think it’s something cool, we’re approaching it differently. It’s really a whole relaunch of the franchise, much more of a dark superhero type.” As far as the critical casting of the ass-kicking lead (but will it be Eric Draven?), Kavanaugh posits: “It will be an actor you’ve heard of, yes. We’re not ruling anything out. We’re looking at both, with the very well known and the ‘very talented but they may not be quite there yet.’”
And picking up on the whole “dark superhero” sentiment, Kavanaugh explains the makeup for the new gothic badass will be “totally different… He’ll have makeup, but it will be different. The best way to compare it is the first Batman and Batman Begins. In terms of their look and feel and character.”
And there you have her. A dark, gritty superhero type with a new appearance, set to be played by anyone from Tommy Cruise to Tommy Gunn. Looks like we’ll have to wait this one out together!
