On August 20 in London, at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square, Ridley Scott‘s post-apocalyptic epic The Dog Stars had its world premiere. With the film’s director and many of its stars dressed in their red carpet finery, including Jacob Elordi’s canine co-star, Rak Jasper, the movie, based on the novel by Peter Heller, quickly became the talk of the town. As the first reactions to The Dog Stars roll in, we want to collect several of the comments from fans and critics and share them with you now.

Looking For a Connection

The film tells the story of Hig (Jacob Elordi), a young pilot who, together with a military survivalist, Bangley (Josh Brolin), has carved out an efficient but isolated homestead in a brutal post-apocalyptic world. But when Hig receives a mysterious radio transmission, he ventures into the unknown in search of the hope and humanity he still believes exist.

The rest of the cast includes Margaret Qualley, Allison Janney, Benedict Wong, and Guy Pearce. It will be released in theaters, IMAX, and premium large formats on August 28.

Is The Dog Stars One of Scott’s Best Movies?

Scott has said that The Dog Stars might be his best movie. But if you recall, Scott made a similar claim about Gladiator II, calling it “one of the best things I’ve ever made.”

“The one I just finished, The Dog Stars, [shot for just 34 days],” Scott said in 2024, during the lead-up to Gladiator II. “It’s the speed of a TV show, but maybe my best movie. Every movie is a discovery of who you are, and making choices about actors. Before I speak to anybody, I look at everything they’ve done. I cast Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, and Josh Brolin. Frequently, the biggest thing I’m good at is casting. If they’re available, normally I get them.”
