The Drama was announced as a romantic comedy starring Zendaya (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) and Robert Pattinson (The Odyssey), but the A24 movie from writer/director Kristoffer Brogli (Dream Scenario) turned out to be one of the more divisive films of the year. If you’ve been waiting to check out The Drama for yourself, the date of the film’s streaming debut has been announced.

When Will The Drama Start Streaming?

HBO Max has announced that the film will debut on the streaming service on July 31. It will make its linear debut on HBO the following day.

The Drama finds Zendaya and Pattinson playing a couple on the verge of marriage who face a major crisis when she reveals a dark secret from her past. I won’t spoil the nature of her secret here, but it is revealed early in the film and has provoked considerable controversy.

What We Thought

Our own Chris Bumbray enjoyed The Drama, although he was very curious how it would resonate with viewers. “Much of the movie revolves around Pattinson as he comes apart at the seams, not knowing how to process what he’s heard or how to reconcile it with the person he still loves,” Bumbray wrote in his review. “Interestingly, I’m probably making The Drama sound heavier than it actually is. Despite how messed up her secret is, the movie is essentially a comedy, with it being almost Woody Allen-esque in how it deconstructs Pattinson’s nebbish character, who is so used to pseudo-intellectualizing things that when something real happens, he can’t deal with it. It’s a great performance, with him also quite funny at times as he gets more unhinged as the movie goes along—while also never really losing your sympathy.

What’s Next?

2026 is the year of Robert Pattinson and Zendaya, as they’re set to appear in two more films together. First up is Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which will hit theaters on July 17th. They will also appear in Dune: Part Three, with Zendaya reprising her role as Chani and Pattinson playing Scytale, one of the film’s villains. The threequel will be released on December 18.
