The Exorcist sequel: Blumhouse, David Gordon Green plan to surprise skeptics

While Blumhouse Productions and director David Gordon Green, the team behind Halloween 2018 (watch it HERE) and the upcoming Halloween Kills, still intend to wrap up their Halloween trilogy with a film titled Halloween Ends, they're also planning to work together on a sequel to a different classic horror property, The Exorcist (watch it HERE). While doing press for the release of The Forever Purge, Blumhouse founder Jason Blum told the folks at Den of Geek that this Exorcist movie they're planning is "going to be like David's Halloween sequel".

In what way? Blum clarifies,

I think it’s going to pleasantly surprise all the skeptics out there. We had a lot of skeptics about Halloween and David turned them around, and I think he’s going to turn it around with The Exorcist."

The producer went on to say that while many people have strong feelings about The Exorcist, 95% of the audience that will turn out for the new film won't have seen or heard about the original film. He said that statistic is "shocking but true", and

I want to make a movie that works for both [audiences]. I want to make a movie for people that know and love the first Exorcist and are furious that we’re doing this, but somehow drag themselves to the theater. I want them to come out happy. And I want to make a movie that people who’ve never heard of The Exorcist really enjoy. I think David did that with Halloween. I think he’ll do that with The Exorcist also."

This new Exorcist is a collaboration between Blumhouse and Morgan Creek. David Robinson and James Robinson will be producing the film with Blum.

Blum didn't reveal any plot details, and it has never been said who will be writing this Exorcist sequel.

Halloween and The Exorcist aren't the only classic horror franchises Green is involved with; he's also working with Clive Barker to develop a Hellraiser TV series for HBO. It remains to be seen which of these projects will go into production first.
