The F*cking Black Sheep: Deep Rising (Video)

Lance Vlcek is back with a new entry in his "The F*cking Black Sheep" video series, and this time his focus is on defending a movie I need some convincing on myself – writer/director Stephen Sommers' 1998 creature feature DEEP RISING.

Starring Treat Williams, Famke Janssen, Anthony Heald, Kevin J. O'Connor, Wes Studio, Jason Flemyng, Djimon Hounsou, and Cliff Curtis, the film has the following synopsis:

When a band of ruthless hijackers invade the world's most luxurious cruise ship, they're shocked to discover the passengers have mysteriously vanished! But that doesn't mean they are alone! Something terrifying is lurking just out of sight: a deadly force from the unexplored depths of the ocean that begins to snatch the horrified intruders one by one!

DEEP RISING has a cult following these days, but it was a box office disappointment when it was released and wasn't exactly warmly received – it even earned a place in Roger Ebert's book I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie. While I don't hate DEEP RISING, it's one that I've never really been able to get into, largely because the humor in it doesn't work for me and I find the character played by Kevin J. O'Connor, a favorite for fans of the movie, to be very annoying.

The film is one of the Lance's favorites, though, and in the video embedded below he has dedicated 8 minutes to letting us know why the now-20-year-old DEEP RISING is deserving of more love. If you're a fan, check it out and see if Lance loves the movie for the same reasons you do. If you're like me, give the video a viewing and see if it changes your mind. Maybe we'll walk away from this with a new appreciation for DEEP RISING…
