The Guardian (1990) William Friedkin, Jenny Seagrove, (The Black Sheep)

William Friedkin has had a pretty impressive and eclectic career. Ranging from dramas like RULES OF ENGAGEMENT and BLUE CHIPS to oscar-winning thrillers like THE FRENCH CONNECTION, us genre fans will always remember him for his game-changing horror masterpiece THE EXORCIST. After seventeen years away from the genre, even though the underrated RAMPAGE belongs up there, Friedkin returned with the supernatural thriller THE GUARDIAN (WATCH IT HEREOWN IT HERE).

Panned by critics and shunned by the general audience, THE GUARDIAN debuted at number three with mostly negative reviews. Roger Ebert even named it one of his "Most Hated Films" and belittled the films ending on his show AT THE MOVIES. Sixteen years after its release, SHOUT FACTORY put out a special edition Blu-ray, giving the film the respect and HD transfer it has always deserved. We over at Arrow In The Head believe THE GUARDIAN is a unique and fun fantasy-horror mash-up. At times creepy, and at others, a bit cheesy; this works because it went in the wildly opposite direction of THE EXORCIST. THE GUARDIAN is a more heightened and exaggerated story compared to Friedkin's other work and needs to be appreciated for the ridiculous and strange time it provides.

THE GUARDIAN has the following synopsis:

A young couple with a newborn baby don't realize that the nanny they hired is a magical nymph who sacrifices infants to an evil tree.
