The Hunger Games gets Elizabeth Banks and several young humans

The hordes of fans anxiously awaiting the adaptation of THE HUNGER GAMES already got their biggest news when Katniss Everdeen and the men in her life were finally cast (that’s Jennifer Lawrence as the heroine, Liam Hemsworth as Gale and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta).

Now the numerous secondary roles are filling out nicely — specifically with Elizabeth Banks. She’ll play Effie Trinket, the colorfully coiffed character who escorts the tributes (the combatants of the games) to the event.

Other tributes who will be played by fresh young faces include newcomers Amandla Stenberg as Rue, Dayo Okeniyi as Thresh, Jack Quaid (offspring of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan) as Marvel, and Leven Rambin as Glimmer.

Gary Ross (BIG, PLEASANTVILLE, SEABISBUIT) is adapting Suzanne Collins’ bestselling young adult book series, which is set in a futuristic society where representatives of the twelve existing Districts are selected to participate in the brutal spectacle of the title.

The Lionsgate movie is due on March 23, 2012.
