Lars Von Trier TV series The Kingdom returning for final season

The Kingdom, a Lars Von Trier TV show that ran for two seasons in the 1990s, is set to return for a third and final season that begins shooting in 2021.

The series was set in the neurosurgical ward of a Copenhagen hospital and it became a bit of a cult show during its original run. The show was released as a five-hour movie in some territories and has originally planned for a three-season run. This did not come to fruition due in part to the deaths of key cast members Ernst-Hugo Järegård and Kirsten Rolffes. Plot details are being kept under wraps but it will be a five-episode run and it will feature a mix of new and returning characters.

Von Trier took on writing duties with Niels Vørsel and he will direct all five episodes under the title The Kingdom Exodus. Trier intends on exploring unsolved stories of the hospital as well as reigniting old feuds between the Swedes and the Danes. To coincide with the release of the third season, which will debut locally on the streamer Viaplay in 2022, restored versions of the eight episodes from the first and second seasons will also be re-released.

American audiences may be more familiar with the remake of the series that was conceived by Stephen King called Kingdom Hospital. The 13-episode U.S. drama originally premiered back in 2004 The concept was originally intended to be a miniseries, but it was later changed to a standard series that lasted only one season.
