Horror movies continue to surge during what may be the biggest renaissance of horror films since the 1980’s especially since Obsession came out this year. Netflix has managed to release yet another high-quality film this month with The Last House, directed by Louis Leterrier (Fast X, Incredible Hulk) And while I was watching this film, my first thought was damn why didn’t they put this in theaters?! It’s the kind of movie that would have played incredibly well with a packed audience, especially once the tension starts to build and the mystery takes over.
What makes this film stand out (without spoilers) is we see this family of four trapped in their house in Seattle, WA caused by an outside force that isn’t your typical scenario in a horror film. While you’re watching this film unfold you ask yourself is it supernatural? Is it aliens? When it is all revealed you’re reaction will be “holy shit! This isn’t at all what I was expecting!” The movie keeps you guessing throughout, and that unpredictability is a huge part of what makes it work. The Last House on Netflix is proof that Hollywood hasn’t run out of ideas JUST yet. This film is a must watch and you can add it to a list of a stacked year of great movies.
So I had the pleasure of interviewing the two leads of the film Greta Lee and Wagner Moura as they discussed the film with me, and how the scanrio compares to living under COVID, their onscreen children they worked with, and the effects used in the film. Their performances are essential to selling the increasingly bizarre situation, especially since so much of the movie depends on making this family dynamic feel believable.
On top of that, I also spoke with Louis Leterrier who explains the contrast of working on an intimate horror film like this compared to his typical big budget action films. It’s a fascinating change of pace for the filmmaker and shows a very different side of him as a director.
