The Last House on the Left (1972) – The Test of Time

Longtime readers of Arrow in the Head will probably remember the article series The Test of Time. Now The Test of Time has been revived as a video series, and you can check out the premiere episode in the embed above! With this one, we’re looking back at the 1972 film The Last House on the Left (watch it HERE), the feature directorial debut of Wes Craven. To find out whether or not The Last House on the Left stands the test of time, click play on the video.

Scripted by Craven and inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s 1960 film The Virgin Spring (which was itself an adaptation of the Swedish ballad “Töres döttrar i Wänge”), The Last House on the Left has the following synopsis:

Teenagers Mari and Phyllis head to the city for a concert, then afterward go looking for drugs. Instead, they find a gang of escaped convicts who subject them to a night of torture and rape. The gang then kills the girls in the woods, not realizing they’re near Mari’s house. When they pose as salesmen and are taken in by Mari’s mother and father, it doesn’t take the parents long to figure out their identities and plot revenge.

The film stars Sandra Cassel, Lucy Grantham, Cynthia Carr, Gaylord St. James, David Hess, Fred Lincoln, Jeramie Rain, and Marc Sheffler.

The Test of Time series has the following description:

We all have certain movies we love. Movies we respect without question because of either tradition, childhood love, or because they’ve always been classics. However, as time keeps ticking, do those classics still hold up? Do they remain must-see? So… the point of this series is to determine how a film holds up for a modern horror audience, to see if it stands the Test of Time.

This episode of The Test of Time was Written by Andrew Hatfield, Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
