After a somewhat lackluster debut with only $12 million in total tickets sold, Disney and Lucasfilm‘s The Mandalorian and Grogu (read our review here) Force-choked another $34 million out of audiences on Friday, which could translate to roughly an $80M 3-day total and $90M over the 4-day Memorial Day weekend. The latest chapter of the Star Wars Saga is playing in 4,3000 theaters. For those counting at home, the $80M mark is still below Solo‘s $84.4M 3-day and $103M 4-day totals. More impressive than this, though, is the continued success of Curry Barker’s Obsession, with an incredible 3-day hold of -1% or $17M and 4-day of $21M. We’ll have more on that in a bit.
The Mandalorian and Grogu breakdown
Last year, Memorial Day Weekend saw the release of Disney’s Lilo & Stitch ($182.6M) and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning ($79), which explains why overall totals were higher last holiday. Thankfully, The Mandalorian and Grogu is making money overseas, which should be more than enough to cover its $165M production budget. Plus, there’s merchandise to consider. The film should sell a lot of toys, which could boost its value in Disney’s eyes. While the movie appears more family-oriented in the trailers, 48% of the audience is over 35 (this is my shocked face), and 52% are under 35. 67% of the audience are dudes. Again, this is my shocked face.
Obsession and other films at the box office
Second place at the box office belongs to Antoine Fuqua’s Michael, with roughly $5M, resulting in a $17M to $20M fifth weekend, down 23%-35%. Lionsgate announced plans to film a sequel before the weekend, which could put more asses in seats as people will want to see the first.
Third, and certainly the most impressive, is Curry Barker’s Obsession, which had a 3-day hold of -1% or $17M and 4-day of $21M. The horror film could reach an 11-day cume of $51.3M by Monday, which is simply impressive from every angle.
Fourth place goes to The Devil Wears Prada 2, with $3M in Friday tickets, $10M-$11M 3-day, -37% to -43%, and $13M-$14M 4-day. Fifth place goes to the Hugh Jackman comedy The Sheep Detectives with $2M at 3,207 markets, $7.5M-$9M for the 3-day, -8% to -20%, with anywhere from $10M-$11M for the 4-day and a running cume by Monday of $45.3M. Sixth place goes to André Øvredal’s Passenger with $3M on Friday, and I Love Boosters (read our review here) in the final slot with $1.5M for the crime comedy’s Friday total.
