A sub-genre that we don’t see more of these days is the Japanese monster movie. You know the ones I’m talking about, the old-school GODZILLA style, the GAMMERA, the GHIDORHA, the man in a rubber suit running around destroying movie sets that are both epic and laughable. Well thanks to Media Blasters and filmmaker/FX artist Tomoo Haraguchi, there’s a new Japanese monster movie on the block… DEATH KAPPA!
As you can probably tell from the new poster, DEATH KAPPA is a man in a monster / turtle suit running around Tokyo (or some other unnamed Japanese city) smashing up shit in a rage of fury and vengeance. What’s its story, anyway? Glad you asked…
DEATH KAPPA is about a benevolent small creature from Japanese mythology that winds up enlarged into the title critter by an atomic explosion. The blast has the same effect on the half-human/half-fish creation of a mad scientist’s granddaughter, and the two titans square off, resulting in much city-stomping.
You like how they even added the ‘city-stomping’ in the description? Haraguchi and company know what they’re doing here, and they do it quite well, as both a reproduction of those films and as a great homage.
DEATH KAPPA is rockin’ the Cannes Film Festival this year, where it will hopefully take home an award or two for something (like Best Japanese Monster Movie). Word on the street is that DEATH KAPPA will be available to own this July.
