The Mummy 4: John Hannah joins Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in new sequel

The gang’s getting back together! THR has reported that John Hannah is set to reunite with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in the upcoming Mummy sequel. He will be reprising the role of Jonathan, the treasure-hungry and less-than-trustworthy older brother of Weisz’s character. He appeared in the previous three Mummy movies alongside Fraser. If the production really is gathering up the old gang, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Oded Fehr will also be back as Ardeth Bay.

The Mummy 4

Ready or Not 2 directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are set to helm The Mummy 4, with production slated to start this fall in London and Morocco. It’s still too early to reveal any real details on The Mummy 4, but the pair have teased that the sequel will be “really, really beautiful and scary and sweeping, and it’s awesome.” Bettinelli-Olpin added that he doesn’t think “Brendan and Rachel are getting involved unless they love that script, and what they read, I think they really liked. And it’s a good script. It’s gonna be fun to make.

The sequel is currently slated for a May 19, 2028 release.

Is The Mummy 3 Canon?

The success of The Mummy prompted a sequel, The Mummy Returns, but it would be almost eight years until the gang returned for a third outing. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor wasn’t nearly as well-received as the first two, especially as Maria Bello replaced Weisz as Evelyn. When asked if they consider it canon to their movie, Bettinelli-Olpin said, “Well, Rachel is in this one.

That should answer the question for you,” Gillett said.

I’d wager that nothing in The Mummy 4 will outright conflict with Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, but it just won’t be referenced. Although I wouldn’t put it past them to include a little meta-dig at the sequel.

I Can’t Wait for This One

I’ve always loved The Mummy movies (even the third one has its moments), and to see the cast come back together once more is something I never thought would happen. They may be ridiculous and over-the-top, but holy hell are they fun. Universal tried to reboot the series with Tom Cruise in 2017. The film was supposed to launch the Dark Universe franchise, but it was a disaster.
