The Penguin series: Cristin Milioti to star opposite Colin Farrell in The Batman spinoff limited drama

Palm Springs and Made for Love star Cristin Milioti is waddling over to The Penguin, a DC original limited drama series destined for HBO Max. Milioti is starring opposite Colin Farrell in The Batman spinoff, playing Sofia Falcone. Bat-fans will know the character from when Crystal Reed played her on the Fox series Gotham. Sofia is the daughter of Carmine Falcone, the calculating crime boss played by John Turturro in Matt Reeves’ The BatmanThe Penguin series finds Sofia Falcone fighting with Oswald Cobblepot (The Penguin) over control of Gotham City following her father’s death.

Speaking with Extra TV, Farrell shared the opening moments of the first episode of DC’s The Penguin series, saying, The Batman ends, so Gotham is still somewhat underwater… I read the first script for the first episode, and just, it opens up with my feet splashing through the water in Falcone’s office, which even just that alone when I read it, I was like, ‘Oh Jesus, it’s lovely.'” Farrell adds that the role is so juicy he feels greedy to want to keep portraying him. “I felt like I didn’t have enough. I wanted to do it more and more and more, so now I get the chance.”

The Batman mastermind Matt Reeves will executive produce The Penguin series alongside Dylan Clark, Farrell, Craig Zobel, and Lauren LeFranc, who also acts as showrunner. Zobel is also getting behind the camera to direct the first two episodes.

Talking with The Hollywood Reporter, LeFranc expressed her enthusiasm for the high-profile project, saying, “I have long been a fan of the world of The Batman, and Matt’s film is such a powerful and bold entry into the canon,” LeFranc said. “I am excited and humbled to continue telling stories in the grimy world of Gotham City – and what better excuse to channel my inner villain than to tell the story of Oswald Cobblepot? I am thrilled to work with Colin, Matt, Dylan, 6th & Idaho, Warners, and HBO Max as we work to bring this story to the screen,” Matt Reeves added, “Colin exploded off the screen as the Penguin in The Batman, and having the chance to thoroughly explore the inner life of that character on HBO Max is an absolute thrill. Dylan and I are so excited to work with Lauren in continuing Oz’s story as he grabs violently for power in Gotham.”
