Well here’s a wonderful bit of news to start my day – a few hours after my positive review for the Swedish vampire drama LET THE RIGHT ONE IN hit, I discover that the thing has won BEST NARRATIVE FEATURE at Tribeca! Very glad to see that this eerie coming-of-age tale made an impact at the fest, as it was easily the best thing I saw, and the absorbed audience I experienced it with would most likely agree.
The official reason given by the jury that awarded director Tomas Alfredson was: “For its mesmerizing exploration of loneliness and alienation through masterful reexamination of the vampire myth.” Yep, that about sums it up…
Magnolia Pictures will distribute the film at some point during the year – hopefully this recent honor will allow it a semi-wide release (we can dream, can’t we?). And of course, we’ve got the remake in development; I’m sure it’s an understatement to say that the update will most likely have none of the bite, charm, or skin-crawling ghastliness that is so inherent in the original.
