The Russo brothers might direct parts 1 and 2 of Avengers: Infinity War

Now that Marvel’s THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is already well into post-production and their other big 2015 release ANT-MAN wrapping up principal photography soon, there is no doubt that Marvel is moving deep into Phase 3 developing. It begins with CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR in 2016 which has already started casting with a likely substantial role for Daniel Bruhl. The film will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo who helmed CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. After impressing audiences and gaining the trust of Marvel with their work, it's being reported that the Russo’s are front-runners for the two-part THE AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.

According to Deadline:

The Russos are building up their Marvel cred with this all-star outing, and I keep hearing they will step up to the ultimate Marvel all-star team and take the reins of The Avengers franchise from Joss Whedon, possibly with that next film that will shoot back to back.

We are getting THE AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR in 2018 and 2019 (lucky us) so it stands to reason that the films will be shot back to back. Also, if the MCU is in for a shake up with CIVIL WAR and possible a drastic roster change at the end of ULTRON, it makes sense for the new era to be brought on with a fresh set of talent and who better than the smart Russo brothers? If CIVIL WAR builds a bridge to INFINITY WAR, it would made sense to keep it in the same hands so the big picture plays out perfectly we hope.

While I imagine a lot of fans would be hesitant to let Whedon move on, I don’t think it’s ever a bad idea to walk away before you get too comfortable; let’s shake this MCU up on and off screen and keep it breathing for a long time.

Would you have liked Joss Whedon to take it home or are you welcome to the Russo brothers stepping in?
