The script for Star Trek 2 is still not really a script

Set phasers on stagnant. See that crew up there? They are patiently waiting for someone to stoke the dilithium crystals and put the good ship Enterprise in motion for a second space journey.

But thus far, the warp core is still in flux on a sequel to STAR TREK. Some two years after the JJ Abrams relaunch zoomed into theaters to cosmic success, the anticipated follow-up is still coming together.

TREK co-writer/producer Roberto Orci gave an update on the sequel to TrekMovie.com, admitting that they still haven’t moved past the outline stage. But at least it’s a nice fat outline: “Just been waiting for JJ to be free to really decide if he likes the story and hear his suggestions before we finish the script. Once he says go, we’ll have it in no time. Meanwhile, our outline is detailed enough (70+ pages!) to do some prep 🙂

Abrams has been busy with his sci-fi thriller/Spielberg homage SUPER 8, but hasn’t even committed to directing STAR TREK 2 yet. And the cast members (most of whom have enjoyed a career boost since their time on the bridge) have often expressed an expectation of when they might begin production on the sequel, but nothing has been solidified without someone at the helm.

While it’s nice that the studio isn’t rushing the sequel, we’d all probably like to see it before actual intergalactic travel is a reality…
