The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge success, becoming one of the highest-grossing movies of 2023 with over $1.3 billion at the box office. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be released on April 1, and the sequel is shaping up to be one of the biggest films of the year at the box office, with an estimated global opening of $350 million. Mamma mia!

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Box Office Opening

According to Deadline, the sequel is eyeing a $175 million gross across five days in the U.S./Canada and $175 million internationally in 79 markets.

I have little doubt that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will cross $1 billion (and beyond) when all is said and done, but will it end the year as the top-grossing film? It does have some significant competition for that honour, as the coming months will see the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu, Disclosure Day, Toy Story 5, Supergirl, Moana, The Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Avengers: Doomsday, and Dune: Part Three.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Cast

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will feature the return of Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. New additions for the sequel include Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Issa Rae as Honey Queen, Luis Guzman as Wart, and none other than Donald Glover as Yoshi.

What We Thought of the First Movie

Fans may have loved the movie, but The Super Mario Bros. Movie received mixed reviews from critics upon release, including our own Chris Bumbray. “Here’s my problem with the movie – it wasn’t much of a film at all,” Bumbray wrote in his review. “For the most part, I felt like I was watching someone play Super Mario, and being a pretty devoted fan of the games, I wanted my turn at the controls. Watching people playMario Kart or Super Mario Odyssey will never be as much fun as playing it yourself, but – I’ll give the movie this – I wanted to run home, turn on the Switch, and play the heck out of the game for a few hours. It’ll sell a lot of games, and kids will love it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the novelty wears off for older fans and they all start itching to just go home and play the game themselves.” You can check out the rest of Bumbray’s review right here.
