The first reactions to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie call it an unrelenting “sugar rush” with fan service galore

One of my most anticipated movies of the year, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is the talk of Twitter this afternoon, as the first reactions to the animated sequel reach social media. The reactions vary, of course, though most agree it shares many of the original’s flaws while still packing enough surprises to keep audiences shouting “Wahoo!”

You can check out some of the first reactions to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie below:

Why not both?

While I appreciate wanting to stand out, I don’t know what comparing the new movie to the original Mario Galaxy game accomplishes. They’re two entirely different forms of media, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie title is exactly that, a title. Nintendo never said they were recreating the game, but rather that they were taking inspiration from it, alongside several other Mario game titles. I haven’t seen the movie yet (I’m seeing it tomorrow), but even the trailers indicate a significant Super Mario Bros. 2 influence.

You can’t ruin my good time

Regardless of what the first reactions to the film say, nothing can deter me from being excited to chill with Mario and his friends on the silver screen again. I had a nostalgia-filled blast with the original, and expect more of the same from the sequel. I don’t need the Mario films to be deep or present some lesson that will resonate with me for years to come. I want to sit back, relax, munch my popcorn, look at the pretty colors, and count the mind-boggling amount of character cameos and Easter eggs that await.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will feature the return of Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. New additions for the sequel include Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Issa Rae as Honey Queen, Luis Guzman as Wart, Donald Glover as Yoshi, and Glen Powell as Fox McCloud of the beloved Starfox game franchise. Do a barrel roll!
