The Wager: Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio setting sail for a shipwreck thriller at Apple

Not long after joining forces for Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are teaming again for The Wager, a shipwreck thriller at Apple Original Films.

Scorsese will direct the adaptation of David Grann‘s upcoming non-fiction novel titled “The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder” for Apple’s streaming platform. DiCaprio will star and produce the feature, developed by Apple Studios and produced by Imperative Entertainment, Sikelia Productions, and Appian Way productions.

According to The Hollywood Reporter‘s description, The Wager takes place in the 1740s. Wager’s story is set in motion when a patched-together boat with 30 emaciated men landed on the coast of Brazil. The men were the surviving crew of a British ship that was chasing a Spanish vessel and had crashed onto an island in South America’s Patagonia region. Their tales of surviving the seas and elements made them heroes.

However, six months later, another vessel, even more beat up than the first one, ended up on the coat of Chile, this one with three men. These new sailors charged that the other men were actually mutineers.

As accusations and counter-accusations flew, the British Admiralty set a particular trial to uncover the truth of what exactly happened on the island, exposing a story of not just a captain and crew struggling to survive while battling some of the most extreme elements on the planet, but also fighting their human natures.

Scorsese and DiCaprio’s latest collaboration is for Killers of the Flower Moon. Written by Eric Roth and adapted from the best-selling novel “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI” by David Grann, the film is based on the 1920s Oklahoma murders in the Osage Nation committed after oil was discovered on tribal land. The movie also stars Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, and Brendan Fraser. It also serves as the sixth collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio and the tenth collaboration between Scorsese and De Niro.
