Yahoo! Movies has just premiered the theatrical trailer for Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego’s found-footage thriller APOLLO 18, which recently got bumped from a late August release to September 2nd. Hopefully the Weinsteins don’t get the itchy finger and postpone this sucker any further.
Officially, Apollo 17 – launched December 17th, 1972 – was the last manned mission to the moon. But a year later, in December of 1973, two American astronauts were sent on a secret mission to the moon funded by the US Department of Defense. What you are about to see is the actual footage that the astronauts captured on that mission. While NASA denies its authenticity, others say it’s the real reason we’ve never gone back to the moon.
While I find the whole found-footage aesthetic more than a bit tiresome, somehow the setting, scenario and film stock used in APOLLO 18 has me intrigued. I know there’s no chance the movie is filled with real found footage, but at least this one is separated by the eerie Lunar atmosphere. I’m into that!
APOLLO 18, which only has Erica Caroll (below) listed in the credits, crashes into theaters September 2nd.
