There’s something off about Ma in trailer for Blumhouse thriller

Yesterday we shared the poster for the upcoming Blumhouse thriller MA, with the promise that the trailer would be released today. Distributor Universal has now lived up to that promise: the trailer is online and can be seen below.

Starring Octavia Spencer as the title character, MA was directed by Tate Taylor (director of THE HELP, for which Spencer won an Oscar) from a screenplay he wrote with Scotty Landes. MA's real name is Sue Ann, and she's

a loner who keeps to herself in her quiet Ohio town. One day, she is asked by Maggie, a new teenager in town, to buy some booze for her and her friends, and Sue Ann sees the chance to make some unsuspecting, if younger, friends of her own.

She offers the kids the chance to avoid drinking and driving by hanging out in the basement of her home. But there are some house rules: One of the kids has to stay sober. Don’t curse. Never go upstairs. And call her “Ma.”

But as Ma’s hospitality starts to curdle into obsession, what began as a teenage dream turns into a terrorizing nightmare, and Ma’s place goes from the best place in town to the worst place on earth.

Word is that Spencer delivers a "daring and unexpected" performance in the movie. In the role of Maggie is Diana Silvers, who must be a new Blumhouse favorite because her first three projects have all been with Blumhouse. She made her screen debut in the FLESH & BLOOD installment of Blumhouse's Hulu series Into the Dark, she appeared in GLASS, and now she's the lead protagonist here.

Spencer and Silvers are joined in the cast of MA by Juliette Lewis, Luke Evans, Missi Pyle, McKaley Miller, Corey Fogelmanis, Gianni Paolo, and Dante Brown.

Taylor produced the film alongside John Norris and Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions. Spencer, Couper Samuelson, Jeanette Volturno, and Robin Fisichella serve as executive producers.

MA is set to reach theatres on May 31st.

I'm totally on board to watch this one. Octavia Spencer menacing teens, running people down, stitching lips, and getting splattered with blood while wearing a hat that says "Sexy"? Yes, please.
