Looks like Warner Bros. is pretty high on Japanese flick DEATH NOTE – THE LAST NAME. According to Variety the pic is the second installment in a two-part mystery-horror film based on a popular comic.
It’s getting a cinematic Menage A Trois by opening in Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. A highly unusual move, but the first installment based on Takeshi Obata’s comic broke Asian box office records in Taiwan and did extremely well elsewhere.
The concept of the comic goes like this:
Helmed by Shunsuke Kaneko (“Gamera 3,” “Azumi 2”), “Death Note” stars Tatsuya Fujiwara as the finder of a notebook that deals death to anyone whose name he writes in its pages.
I need me one of them books! That’ll probably be a long wait, though, so let’s just hope the US and European rights get worked out soon because they’re still in negotiations.
