Thunderbolts will start shooting next spring, according to Wyatt Russell

Although Deadpool 3 will be the only Marvel Cinematic Universe movie released in 2024, the new year will see multiple Marvel projects kicking off production, including Thunderbolts. While speaking with THR, Wyatt Russell said that shooting on Thunderbolts should get underway in March or April.

I’m so lucky to get to work with the kind of talent that I’m going to work with when Thunderbolts starts up in March or April,” Russell said. “I don’t know [exactly] when they’re starting yet.” The actor plays John Walker, who was appointed as Captain America’s successor by the U.S. government in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. As we know, he made some questionable choices and was stripped of his title, but the final episode found him recruited by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine to become U.S. Agent.

John Walker still has a long way to go before he’s redeemed, but Russell is excited to play the character once again in Thunderbolts. “There’s so much to play with John, and there’s so much more to do with John,” said Russell, adding that he can’t wait to share the screen with the rest of the Thunderbolts cast. “Sebastian Stan is a great friend and you couldn’t ask for a better actor,” he said. “Florence Pugh is one of the best actresses in the world right now, and she’s one of my personal favorite actresses in the world. David Harbour. Steven Yeun is one of the better actors in the world right now. You’ve got all of these people in this movie, and I couldn’t feel luckier.

Thunderbolts is set be be directed by Jake Schreier, who worked with Wyatt Russell on several episodes of Lodge 49. “So it just feels like we’re going for something that has depth and something interesting to theorize about beyond just flying around and doing superhero stuff,” Russell said. “That’s awesome and cool, and it’ll be in there, too, obviously, but I’m hoping to do what we’ve done with Godzilla. There’s a human element to this and those characters. They’re hard stories to write and do, but if you work hard enough and you really put your heart and soul into it, you can always make them great. So I’m really looking forward to working hard and having a blast. They’re so fun when you let them be fun, and I could not be more excited.

Thunderbolts was originally slated to hit theaters next December, but was pushed to July 25, 2025 last month. Wyatt Russell can currently be seen starring in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which is streaming on Apple TV+.
