Tim Burton NOT directing a 3D animated Addams Family film.

UPDATE: According to MTV this story is not true. And I quote: MTV immediately reached out to Burton’s people for comment, and they’ve responded with some clarification after speaking with the filmmaker himself. “There is no truth to the story. Tim has not lined up any of his upcoming projects.”

Tim Burton has found his next film. Well, his next stop-motion animated one, anyway. According to Deadline.com, Burton and Illumination Entertainment, the Universal-based family film unit headed by Chris Meledandri, have acquired the underlying rights of to THE ADDAMS FAMILY drawings, with an eye toward making a 3D animated film based on the kooky family.

The idea is to be true to the original Charles Addams artwork, as opposed to be inspired by the cheesy 60s t.v. show or the two Barry Sonnenfeld films. No start date has been announced, nor has a writer been hired yet, but an announcement on both fronts can be expected soon…

The big problem with this is, we already have a perfectly fine ADDAMS FAMILY movie still fresh in most of our minds. Not that it’s a masterpiece or anything, but it captured the tone, weirdness and icky humor as well as you could hope. (It was also like a Tim Burton movie not made by Tim Burton.) Plus, can you really top Raul Julia’s Gomez, or Christina Ricci’s Wednesday? (Who, judging from the picture below, really hit the skids… In a good way.)
