Yup. Another month means another round of “what the hell is Tim Burton going to direct next.”
Ever since crushing the box-office with the largest 3D opening in film history (ALICE IN WONDERLAND), it’s been one guess after another regarding Tim Burton’s directorial follow up. Early rumblings had the iconoclast attached to an ADDAMS FAMILY adaptation, in 3D of course, and subsequent offerings had the dude attached to his long gestating FRANKENWEENIE, and most recently to adapt the board-game MONSTERPOCALYPSE. Well gang, let’s toss another title into the ring!
Word out of Latino Review this evening has it that Burton is once again attached to adapt MAI (aka MAI, THE PSYCHIC GIRL), based on the popular Japanese comic series. This is a project Burton was attached to way back in the late 80s. Sony, who acquired the property like 8 years ago, killed the project in light of its recent financial woes. The rights have been given back to Burton, who seems intent on tossing the project on the front burner. Not only that, word is Burton will be supervising the screenplay.
Now on to what MAI is all about. Peep it…
The main character is Mai Kuju, a 14-year-old Japanese girl with powerful psychic abilities. She is being pursued by the Wisdom Alliance, an organization which secretly strives to control the world. The alliance already controls four other powerful psychic children, and it has hired the Kaieda Intelligence Agency to capture Mai.
Sounds like Burton’s M.O. Perhaps not as much as the ADDAMS FAMILY, but certainly dark enough to sate his most loyal fans.
But how do y’all feel? Is MAI something you wanna see Burton tackle next, or does FRANKENWEENIE and MONSTERPOCALYPSE sound like better projects to follow ALICE IN WONDERLAND.
