Timothy Olyphant, The Mandalorian, Boba Fett

Just last week it was revealed that Timothy Olyphant, best known for Deadwood and Justified, would be appearing in the upcoming second season of The Mandalorian, but at the time, there were few details regarding Olyphant's character. Thanks to the good folks at /Film, a few very interesting tidbits have been revealed – namely, that Olyphant's character will be wearing Boba Fett's Mandalorian armour.

Now, I know what you're saying, wasn't it reported that Temuera Morrison had been cast as Boba Fett earlier this month? Well, there's a big difference between wearing Boba Fett's armour and being Boba Fett himself. According to /Film, Timothy Olyphant will be playing Cobb Vanth, a character introduced in Chuck Wendig's "Aftermath" series. Vanth is a former slave who becomes the self-appointed sheriff of a Tatoonie settlement and just so happens to wear a very distinctive set of armour. Here's /Film's Peter Sciretta with more details:

Introduced in Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath book series, Vanth is the self-appointed sheriff of the Tatooine-based settlement Freetown. He wears a mysterious set of Mandalorian armor that was acquired from Jawas who scavenged the wreckage of Jabba the Hutt’s sail barge shortly after the events of Return of the Jedi. As you may recall, that was the site of a battle where Boba Fett was thrown into the Sarlacc Pit on Tatooine’s Dune Sea. It’s assumed that the Mandalorian armor purchased by Vanth is none other than the infamous green armor formerly worn by one of the galaxy’s most notorious bounty hunters, Boba Fett.

If Cobb Vanth is still wearing Boba Fett's armour, you can imagine that a certain bounty hunter might just be looking to retrieve it, but as with all things Star Wars, we'll have to wait to see how it plays out on screen before it becomes official. In addition to Timothy Olyphant and Temuera Morrison, new additions to the second season of The Mandalorian include Michael Biehn (THE TERMINATOR) as "a bounty hunter from The Mando's past," Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) as Bo-Katan Kryze, a Mandalorian warrior, and major rumours have also pointed to Rosario Dawson (Daredevil) playing Ahsoka Tano, the former Jedi Padawan of Anakin Skywalker who turned into a spymaster for the Rebel Alliance. The second season of The Mandalorian is expected to debut on Disney+ in October 2020.
