Timur Bekmambetov orchestrating alien invasion in The Darkest Hour

Are alien invaders taking over as the go-to bringers of the apocalypse in cinema? Zombies (and their infected cousins) have been all the rage in recent years, but it looks like aliens are making a strong comeback. We’ve got Jonathan Liebesman’s BATTLE: LOS ANGELES, The Straus Brothers’ SKYLINE, Warner Bros’ SPACE INVADERS, Peter Berg’s BATTLESHIP, and Oren Peli’s AREA 51 all in the pipeline, and that’s just to name a few. You can now add THE DARKEST HOUR to that list.

The flick, as reported by Deadline, is being described as a a 28 Days-like thriller about a group of kids struggling to survive in Russia after an alien invasion. Timur Bekmambetov, who was just announced as a producer on ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER, will produce this in his native country. Chris Gorak, director of the low-budget terrorist thriller RIGHT AT YOUR DOOR, is in line to helm the sci-fi flick.

The original screenplay was written by two dudes who know the genre pretty well: Les Bohem (Steven Spielberg’s “Taken”) and Jon Spaihts (Ridley Scott’s ALIEN prequel).
