Peter Jackson hasn’t directed a feature film in twelve years, but hopefully, that will be changing soon. He’s confirmed to Gold Derby that he recently completed the script for what will likely be his next project: the long-awaited Tintin 2.
“Fran and I have been writing a script for the next Tintin film because 15 years ago, Steven Spielberg directed a Tintin film and I produced it,” Jackson explained. “The idea was that then I was supposed to go straight onto a second one, and we’d swap the roles, so I’d direct the second one and he’d produce it. It’s just taken 15 years to get there, unfortunately, a bit late. But it’s a timeless story. So we just wrapped up. So probably the next film that I’d actually direct is a Tintin movie.“
The first Tintin movie was directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 2011. The sequel has been stuck in development hell for so long that even with this latest update, I honestly don’t know if we’ll ever see it. I hope we do, but…
Nothing has been confirmed, but it had been rumoured that the sequel would be an adaptation of “The Seven Crystal Balls” and “Prisoners of the Sun.” We will likely see the return of Jamie Bell as Tintin and Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock, as well as Nick Frost and Simon Pegg as Thomson and Thompson, respectively, while also meeting Professor Calculus, the brilliant yet absent-minded professor who is only a little hard of hearing in one ear.
That said, the latest script could be taking inspiration from one of Herge’s other Tintin stories.
The last movie Jackson directed was The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which was released in 2014. Since then, he has helmed several documentaries, including the World War I documentary They Shall Not Grow Old and The Beatles: Get Back – The Rooftop Concert, but no narrative feature films.
Earlier this year, Jackson explained that the death of his longtime cinematographer Andrew Lesnie left him uncertain about tackling another movie.
“I think his death changed my creative path,” Jackson said. “The result is for 11 or 12 years, I haven’t made a drama film because that would require me to build a relationship with another DP.“
What do you think? Will Tintin 2 actually happen? Should it happen? Let us know in the comments.
