Todd Phillips’ Joker to go on a concert tour this April

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Concert tours for major tentpole franchises aren't exactly new. Both the HARRY POTTER series and HBO's Game of Thrones have taken their musical stylings on a magical mystery tour. Even various STAR WARS films have been shown publicly with a full symphony orchestra. Well it seems as though another successful film will be taking its musical talents on the road as it's just been announced that Todd Phillips' JOKER will begin a concert tour this April.

Although the lion's share of JOKER's critical acclaim rightly goes to Joaquin Phoenix, you can't ignore some of the other elements. Lawrence Sher's cinematography is electric and Jeff Groth's editing is superb. However, aside from Phoenix, my favorite part of JOKER is Hildur Guonadottir's score. The Icelandic composer just picked up a BAFTA award for best original score and is up for an Oscar this Sunday. Apparently that's enough to warrant a musical tour for the Clown Prince of Crime. (That and $1 billion at the box office.) Guonadottir herself is floored at the prospect of her music getting the live concert treatment:

"I’m thrilled to get to see and hear Joker in the cinema with a live orchestra. When we recorded the music, the orchestra brought such depth and detailed attention to the performances that we were all literally holding our breaths during most of the recording sessions. It was a beautiful trip. I’m so happy to get to go there again and for an audience to experience that too.”

Joker Live will commence on April 30 beginning in London, England and run through July. The concert will tour throughout Europe and is expected to expand internationally, hopefully into the United States. Jeff Atmajian, the conductor and orchestrator of the original soundtrack will conduct the London debut. As of yet there's been no official word on further tour dates but expect those soon.

Guonadottir's star is certainly ascending right now. Odds are high that she'll take home the big prize come Sunday. In addition, she's already won a Grammy and an Emmy for her work on last year's Chernobyl. While she currently doesn't have any future works on the books in television or film, I'd look for that to change very quickly.

So what say you guys? Are you interested in seeing a Joker Live concert? Did you like Guonadottir's score? Sound off in the comments below!
