Tom Cruise’s Top Gun sequel to blast into theaters on July 2019

Get ready to hit the skies and participate in some shirtless Volleyball once again, as the release of Tom Cruise's TOP GUN sequel is just slightly over two years away. Paramount Pictures have given the long-in-development sequel a July 12, 2019 release, which places it a week after the SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING sequel and a week before Jon Favreau's live-action adaption of THE LION KING.

As for who will direct the TOP GUN sequel, it was previously reported that Joseph Kosinski (TRON: LEGACY) was the frontrunner for the gig and several trades have since said Kosinski is a firm bet, but that nothing is official until the deal is finalized. The sequel, which Tom Cruise has previously revealed will be titled TOP GUN: MAVERICK, is said to follow fighter pilots as they grapple with the drone technology which is making their old style of flying obsolete. Tom Cruise will of course reprise his role as Maverick, who is now a flight instructor teaching the next generation of pilots. Production on the TOP GUN sequel is expected to get underway by the end of the year.

Which other TOP GUN cast-members do you hope return for the sequel?

Talk of a sequel to the Tony Scott film has persisted for some time, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer saying that they've "been trying to make a sequel and we're not going to stop … what Tom tells me is that no matter where he goes in the world, people refer to him as Maverick. It's something he is excited about so as long as he keeps his enthusiasm hopefully we'll get it made." Looks like Tom's enthusiasm has won again.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK will hit theaters on July 12, 2019.
