Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock want to make us cry with September 11 drama

As far as movies that deal with September 11th go, there haven’t exactly been many winners. WORLD TRADE CENTER, REIGN OVER ME and [SPOILER ALERT] most notoriously REMEMBER ME have all disappointed on various levels with only UNITED 93 really providing any legitimate emotional core. But that’s not stopping Hollywood from trying to make another movie that deals with post-9/11 issues.

Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock are in talks to star in the upcoming adaptation of the Jonathan Safran Foer novel “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” the story of a young boy who finds a key that belonged to his father who died in the World Trade Center and his search to find out what it unlocks. Warner Bros. and Paramount are teaming up on the film with producer Scott Rudin (THE SOCIAL NETWORK).

Bullock would star as the boy’s mother, who is having trouble dealing with the death of her husband. Hanks would play the boy’s late father who appears to him periodically in flashbacks. Eric Roth (THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON) has written the script and Stephen Daldry (THE HOURS) would direct.

The film would be Bullock’s first post-Oscar role should she commit. Hanks just wrapped the Universal comedy LARRY CROWNE.
