Is Tom Holland the new box office king? One look at this weekend’s box office grosses might lead you to think so, with him headlining the two biggest movies not only of the week, but of the whole summer (and maybe even the year). While everyone thought Spider-Man: Brand New Day would be big (including us), no one expected it to be setting box office records. But that’s exactly what it’s doing, with the film grossing $168 million on Friday, setting the record for the highest-grossing opening day at the domestic box office, beating Avengers: Endgame‘s first Friday, which brought in $157.4 million.
Will it set an opening weekend record?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day seems to have the potential to top Avengers: Endgame‘s $357.1 million opening weekend. However, according to Deadline, Sony — the studio releasing Spidey — is being more cautious, saying it expects the film to finish the weekend with about $320 million. We’ll report back on the final total tomorrow.
At the same time, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, in which Holland co-stars, is continuing to perform strongly, with it on track for $51 million this weekend. It has grossed $396 million domestically so far, passing Oppenheimer to become the director’s third highest-grossing movie of all time in North America, with only his two Batman sequels ahead of it. IMAX 70mm showings are still sold out for weeks, with the film’s exclusive run recently being extended into September.
Toy Story 5 is looking at third place with $6.2 million, followed by Minions & Monsters with $5.6 million. Moana, which is losing about a quarter of its screens this weekend, will likely round out the top five with $5.3 million.
Meanwhile, Gregg Araki’s indie release I Want Your Sex, starring Olivia Wilde, is looking at a poor $570,000 opening, showing that it’s becoming harder and harder to successfully counterprogram major studio releases during the summer.
