For a time, it looked as if fans of Tom Holland's Spider-Man would be left wanting with regard to watching the character thwip and quip his way through the MCU, after Sony and Disney failed to negotiate new terms for their mutual use of the character. In fact, the whole "will they or won't they" affair went up in flames on August 20th, when it was announced that a deal to share the web-slinger was declared "100 percent dead" by both parties. However, a new report hailing from The Hollywood Reporter claims that it was indeed Tom Holland himself who helped soothe the savage beasts and was able to help both companies reach an understanding.
Sources close to the matter say that Holland had made multiple attempts to appeal to Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger and Sony film chairman Tom Rothman on the wall-crawling hero's behalf. While details related to Holland's methods of persuasion remain a mystery for the time being, it's to be believed that he'd gathered a massive amount of fan reactions to the news as ammunition for his case. In the end, Sony and Disney were able to strike a new deal that would see Disney and Marvel reaping roughly 25% of the third Spider-Man film's profits, while also retaining merchandising rights. As a part of the arrangement, the House of Mouse also agreed to foot a quarter of the film's financing … knowing full-well that they'll make their money back and then some, I might add.
With greed and corporate shenanigans kicked squarely in the face, it would appear as if Tom Holland and Spider-Man fans have won the day … for now.
As the deal now stands, we're getting a third film in the SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING series, as well as an appearance from Spidey in at least one more MCU-related film. The third Spider-Man film is scheduled for a July 16, 2021 release, with Jon Watts expected to return as director, as will many members of the Homecoming cast.
