Tom Holland says MCU Spider-Man 3 most ambitious superhero movie ever made

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been raising the bar for superhero movies for over a decade at this point, but if Tom Holland is to be believed, we haven't seen anything yet. The actor is in the midst of production on his third standalone Spider-Man film, which is also set to star Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and Marisa Tomei, in addition to Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Jamie Foxx as Electro, and Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus; not only that, but there have also been rumours that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will be reprising their Spider-Man roles as well.

Tom Holland recently spoke with Variety, and although he couldn't say anything about Spider-Man 3, he did claim that it will be the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made. Definitely not a small boast, but it does appear that we're in for something special.

I can say that it’s the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made. You sit down, read the script, and see what they’re trying to do, and they’re succeeding. It’s really impressive. I’ve never seen a standalone superhero movie quite like it. And I’m just, you know, again, that lucky little shit who happens to be Spider-Man in it. We got a lot more shooting to do. We started before Christmas and shot for like seven weeks. We stopped for the Christmas break, and then we’re starting again. I’m just as excited as everyone else to see it, let alone be a part of it.

It's safe to say that Marvel Studios will be exploring the multiverse with their next phase, and we'll likely see the beginnings of that plan take shape by the time WandaVision comes to an end. With Elizabeth Olsen also set to star alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, we could see the fallout of both those projects carry on into Spider-Man 3, which is currently slated for a December 17, 2021 release.
