After 15 seasons and nearly 300 episodes, Blue Bloods came to an end a couple of years ago, much to the chagrin of its star, Tom Selleck. Selleck, who starred as Frank Reagan, the New York Police Department Police Commissioner, said that everyone involved wanted to come back for more. “I can’t figure out why they didn’t start streaming it, do 10 episodes a year,” he said. “But I’m not the boss. Everybody wanted to come back. And I think with this cast, it would have been a gift for the audience. I don’t make those decisions. I’m prepared to celebrate and commemorate this show, but I’m still getting used to it.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Selleck is still feeling frustrated about the whole situation. The star spoke with Ted Danson on his podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name, and when he addressed the show, he explained,
Blue Bloods was a labor of love. The real truth to that is in the last year… at our last family dinner, everybody wanted to come back. We’d already taken a 25 percent cut in salary. We’d already done all sorts of things to keep the show going.”sponsored content
He continued to say,
It was very frustrating because Blue Bloods was — out of the top 100 shows on broadcast television — number six in our fifteenth year.”
Then, he would explain further, “Nobody wanted to leave. Everybody was gonna stay on. That’s hard to get. It may be some kind of record to have the same cast intact for that length of time. Usually— if it wasn’t a family, it would be different, but you know, you couldn’t very well replace Jamie (Will Estes) or Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) or anybody with another actor.”
Although Selleck would have loved to keep going with Blue Bloods, he has no plans to retire. During the show’s last year, Selleck made sure to clarify that he’s not through with acting, “I’m not retiring. I‘ve got a mortgage; I got a ranch that I love and I love the work. Look, I’m not exactly a spring chicken in the business.” He said, “I’m still adjusting. I’d like to think that somebody will think of something different. A comedy would be nice.”
