Alicia Vikander recently offered a Tomb Raider 2 update that teases big things to come for the long-gestating sequel. Based on the video game of the same title, Tomb Raider is an action-adventure film that chronicles the early adventures of Lara Croft, an intrepid explorer and destroyer of priceless artifacts. Okay, so maybe that last bit isn’t a part of her official job description, but I’ve seen Lara smash a lot of ancient pottery in my day. At first, Free Fire‘s Ben Wheatley planned on helming the sequel to Vikander’s 2018 reboot, but then that arrangement fell through. The sequel now will be directed by Lovecraft Country‘s Misha Green, and Vikander is very excited about the bold direction the film is taking.

While speaking with Total Film, Vikander offered a Tomb Raider 2 update that’s sure to get fans excited for Lara’s grand return.

“When the studio first said they were interested in a sequel, I got really excited,” says Vikander. “When Misha was mentioned to me and I saw the work on Lovecraft Country, I was extremely impressed.”

Vikander then touched on her excitement to work with Green, another talented woman that’s the same age as Vikander, as well as some of the big action set pieces they’re planning for the sequel.

“It’s so much fun on the Zooms I’ve had with Misha to finally sit with another woman my own age,” Vikander recalls. “I get to talk about big action set pieces and stunts that we want to make. I’m hoping that we get on track and get to do something together.”

Considering where 2018’s Tomb Raider left off, I’m hoping that we get plenty of dual pistol gunplay and fancy acrobatics in the next installment. Of course, the dream would be for Lara to face off against a vicious Tyrannosaurus Rex just like she did in the original game, but something tells me that’s not going to happen.

Currently, the Tomb Raider sequel has the working title Obsidian, and Green has already completed a draft of the script. The film still has a long way to go toward production, though it sounds like Vikander is more than ready to tie her hair in a tight braid and get going. I hope the sequel pushes Vikander to her limit as she’s a great physical actress and is tough as nails in the role of Lara Croft. No other cast members have been announced for the sequel. However, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a cameo from Lara’s family butler Winston Smith, who’s always ready with an exasperated groan alongside a hot cup of tea and biscuits. Yum!
