Tony Gilroy set to write and direct Cassian Andor series for Disney+

The Mandalorian, our first live-action STAR WARS TV series, is set to debut on the Disney+ streaming service next month, but there are more STAR WARS shows on the way, including a prequel to ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY which will focus on Cassian Andor, a Rebel intelligence officer. Variety has now reported that Tony Gilroy has joined the Cassian Andor series as he's been tapped to pen the pilot as well as direct multiple episodes.

Tony Gilroy, best known as the screenwriter of the BOURNE franchise as well as MICHAEL CLAYTON and THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE, is no stranger to the world of ROGUE ONE as he co-wrote the film as well as directed portions of its extensive reshoots. Gilroy will be working alongside Stephen Schiff, who will serve as showrunner. Diego Luna will be reprising the role of Cassian Andor for the new series, which has been described as a "rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire." In a statement released when the project was first announced, Diego Luna said:

Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me. I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.

It has also been confirmed that Alan Tudyk will be back as K-2SO, Cassian's droid sidekick. There's no word on when production on the Cassian Andor series might kick off, but Disney has previously indicated that the series would debut on Disney+ in 2021. In addition to The Mandalorian and the untitled Cassian Andor series, we've also got an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor to look forward to as well.
