Top Gun: Maverick: Jon Hamm says sequel meant to be seen on the big screen

One of my most anticipated films of last summer was Top Gun: Maverick and I was thoroughly upset when the film initially got shifted to December of 2020 to only get moved again to the summer of 2021. Fingers crossed that it gets to keep its summer release date this year because one of the film's stars, Jon Hamm, is revealing that he saw a screening of the movie last summer on the big screen and he feels that is the right way to see it.

In a new interview with KSDK, Hamm, who plays Vice Admiral Cyclone, is very confident that audiences' will be blown away by the film on the big screen and that it will leave an emotional impact as well:

"It's going to leave a lot of people with their minds blown I think. I got the good fortune to see it over the summertime. They opened a theater for us and we all had to sit 15 feet apart and wear masks and everything, but we got to see it on the big screen, which is the right way to see it. It's really visually stunning. And I think people are going to be moved by the story as well."

In a previous interview, Miles Teller, who plays Goose's son in the highly anticipated sequel, spoke on the visuals presented in the film and made it a point to discuss the use of practical effects in the film. He revealed that the movie features real plane stunts performed in the air rather than using CGI and he believed that the film's reliance on playing the action real in-camera would help the sequel stand up on its own as a classic when it's all said and done:

"I don't think it would be possible to recreate what we did with all of the practical flying. You hope to be part of something that lasts forever. I think that we might have done that. It is fun, entertaining, emotional, and high-octane. There is a lot of heart in the story, and I can't wait for people to see it. For fans of the original, I think they are going to be grinning from ear-to-ear the whole time. This is going to give them what they want."

Top Gun: Maverick takes place decades after the original film and the sequel still finds Maverick (Tom Cruise) is still one of the navy's best pilots. He is where he belongs, continuing to push the envelope rather than taking a cushy desk job. The sequel soon finds him training a new generation of pilots and wounds from the past threaten to derail that training. The film, directed by Joseph Kosinski, also stars Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer.
