Top Gun: Maverick – what did you think?

True story: at the movie theatre I visit here in Montreal, there’s been a poster up for Top Gun: Maverick since 2019, one which promotes the June 2020 release date that, thanks to a pesky pandemic, never happened. Now, years later, Top Gun: Maverick is finally hitting theaters and earning rave reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and boffo box office. It turns out that Paramount was right not to rush the release date, as the movie was indeed with the wait.

To me, Top Gun: Maverick is a lot like Mad Max: Fury Road. Thematically or even stylistically, they’re very different, but both are what I would call absolutely perfect examples of their genre and achieve exactly what they’re trying to achieve. Given that it’s one of the best-reviewed movies of the year, could we maybe expect some awards consideration for Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski?

At any rate, we’ve more than had our say here at JoBlo. I saw this one back at CinemaCon, and since then, I’ve been raving, so it’s time for you all to check it out and let me know in the comments if you think it’s been worth the wait. WARNING: there will likely be spoilers below, so if you haven’t seen the movie yet, go check it out, and then come back and post your comments. In the meantime, check out my video review of Top Gun: Maverick above, plus a recent video interview I did with star Glen Powell below!
