The Weinsteins don’t seem to be the ones at the helm though. The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Neal H. Moritz and his Original Films banner are talking to Columbia right now to finalize a deal that would have Mortiz remaking the 1990 sci-fi classic for the studio. The original film starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and was directed by Paul Verhoeven. It was based on Philip K. Dick’s story ‘We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.’ Here’s the original film’s synopsis:
A man is haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars where he buys a literal dream vacation from a company called Rekall Inc., which sells implanted memories. The man comes to believe he is a secret agent and ends up on a Martian colony, where he fights to overthrow a despotic ruler controlling the production of air.
It’s actually a pretty twisted movie and doesn’t really need a retooling in my opinion. Then again this is Hollywood we’re talking about. Mortiz hopes to retell the TOTAL RECALL story in a fresh way thanks to advancements in technology and state-of-the-art visual effects. We’ll see.
