Toy Story 5, which follows Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang as they confront a new generation of children who are more enamoured of screens than playthings. Over the last 30 years, Pixar has maintained the high quality of this franchise, but each sequel feels like it’s testing fate. They always manage to pull it off, but can they do it again with Toy Story 5? During Disney’s CinemaCon presentation, a pair of Toy Story 5 clips were screened.
Toy Story 5 at CinemaCon
Tom Hanks and Tim Allen took the stage to introduce the first clip from the new movie. It starts with Bonnie getting the Lilypad tablet, and she gets addicted within seconds. The other toys are very jealous, and Jessie confronts Lilypad, saying they want Bonnie to make friends with the neighbours. But Lilypad thinks making friends online is just as good, and she sends friend requests to the other children.
Jessie starts to fight Lilypad, but Bonnie walks in. She learns that she’s been invited to a sleepover by another girl, and is thrilled.
The second clip features the return of Woody, sporting his bald spot, and he reunites with Buzz. However, Buzz quickly learns that Jessie called Woody because he’s her deputy, and Buzz is a little offended, so the pair bicker over who’s the real deputy.

Moana at CinemaCon
Disney loves giving their animated classics the live-action treatment, and the next to receive this “honour” is Moana. Dwayne Johnson returns as Maui, this time wearing a questionable wig and 40 lbs of prosthetics, alongside Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana; John Tui as Moana’s no-nonsense father, Chief Tui; Frankie Adams, who portrays Moana’s playful and strong-willed mother, Sina; and Rena Owen as Moana’s revered Gramma Tala.
Johnson appeared on stage, sharing that the character of Maui was inspired by his late grandfather. He then pulled up a photo of his grandfather, saying, “This is for you, High Chief.“
He then explained why he wanted to do a live-action version of the animated film, saying, “There’s something special and important [when] you take animation into live-action. We’re able to showcase our Pacific island, real people, and it’s humbling and inspiring all at once.” He then brought Lagaʻaia out on stage, where they debuted a new trailer for the film.
Thomas Kail (Hamilton) directs the film, with Jared Bush, who wrote the animated original, returning to pen the screenplay for the live-action remake alongside Dana Ledoux Miller. The film is set to hit theaters on July 10.
