Trailer: Horror fairy tale Tigers Are Not Afraid gets August release

We reported a few months ago that the genre streaming service Shudder had acquired all rights across all territories to writer/director Issa López's "haunting horror fairy tale" TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID, and now we know that the company is planning to give the film a theatrical release in New York, Los Angeles, and Toronto on August 23rd. A wider release will follow.

Produced by Marco Polo Constandse's Filmadora Nacional and Issa López's Peligrosa, the film digs into

the dire plight of children orphaned by Mexico’s brutal drug wars. Desperate and alone, 10-year-old Estrella (Paolo Lara) is one of those lost children. Given three magical wishes, Estrella asks first that her missing mother return, which she does… from the dead. Estrella flees to the streets and finds a new surrogate family — a boy named Shine (Juan Ramón López) and a gang of orphans who sleep on rooftops — but she soon discovers that the past and the dead never truly leave us behind.

A few weeks out from the theatrical release, a trailer has arrived online. Watching this, it's easy to see how TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID captured the imagination of writers and filmmakers like Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, and Guillermo del Toro (and of course the trailer features the praise they had for the movie). It looks to be deeply emotional, quite unique, and visually stunning.
