I miss Dennis Hopper. I remember first seeing him in SUPER MARIO BROS. as King Koopa, and while I was disappointed that he wasn't a giant dinosaur like in the videogame I loved, I do remember specifically thinking he'd make a good villain in another movie. Well, the next movie I saw him in was SPEED where he gave an awesome performance as the villain, which also confirmed what 5-year old Damion had already suspected. He was always an electrifying presence, even if the film around him wasn't very good (like LAND OF THE DEAD).
This brings us to the film THE LAST FILM FESTIVAL, which was also unfortunately the last film he made. Here's the synopsis:
There are over 4,000 film festivals around the world. Where would you go if your film was turned down by 3,999 of them? When an obscure film festival is the last hope for a failing producer (Dennis Hopper) and his “disaster” of a movie collides with the homespun innocence of small town America, neither will ever be the same. Nick will do anything to get his film distributed, including manipulating his dysfunctional cast into attending the festival where Hollywood egos hilariously slam into small town politics.

Well that was…something. It looked like it was filmed on a camcorder from the '80s, and the humor was as flat as the lighting. It also doesn't seem to necessarily have a mockumentary conceit – like THE OFFICE or Christopher Guest films – to explain that. However, the idea behind it is alright (sleazy producer tries to sell shitty film to festivals), it just seems that there wasn't the budget or talent behind-the-scenes to pull it off. But who knows! It could just be a bad trailer. However, if it's meant to sell me on the film – even if it's secretly hilarious – it didn't do a good job, in my opinion.Though Hopper looked like he did a good job on it.
The film, also starring Chris Kattan and Leelee Sobieski, will roll out on September 16th, 2016.
