TV Review: The Walking Dead (Season 6, Episode 7)

EPISODE 7: Heads Up

THE HOOK: Glenn’s back from the dead, but finds returning to Alexandria harder than expected. Meanwhile, troubles brewing inside the walls as well as outside.

THE LOWDOWN: You gotta love the episodes before a mid-season finale and a season finale, they string you along slowly, then, BAM all hell breaks loose just in time for the credits to roll. We still don’t know who needed ‘help’ last week (I’m assuming it was Dwight), but hey, now we know what happened to Glenn. Ironically, it’s just like many people assumed—the guts were Nicholas’ and Glenn climbed under the dumpster amidst the chaos. Yes…how very…lame. Don’t get me wrong, I love Glenn and I’m glad he’s alive, but what a clusterf*ck, unbelievably bullshit, string along game to play on us. I suppose it’s not as bad as the hunt for Sophia, which took up half of the second season, but it’s still a rather nerve-wracking way to go about things. That said, welcome back Glenn!

The Glenn/Enid encounter ate up a good portion of the episode, despite me feeling like it really didn’t have to. I don’t know, I guess with everything that’s happened, I was a little annoyed that Glenn tried so hard to bring her back to Alexandria with him. I get it bro, you’re a good guy, but sometimes no means no. You’d hope that after the Nicholas debacle Glenn would be thinking twice before sticking his neck out for people, but I guess not. Rick however, seems to be at his wits end with the Alexandria tribe. He doesn’t come out and say it (or I guess he kinda does with Tara), but he’s very standoffish when dude comes to help him fix the wall, yet he has no problem teaching Ron how to shoot a gun. I guess I can’t be mad that he and Carl don’t seem to suspect the kid’s bad news, but I think giving him a gun (empty or not) was a bad call, especially considering he breaks into the damn armory, steals bullets, and then looks to be planning to kill Carl.

Morgan. God I love the guy, but he’s not making it easy. His Wolf project is a bust, there’s no two ways about it. The real question is, how many people are going to die because of it. By the looks of things, Doctor Denise may be first in line. Morgan is an asset to the team, and I get why he’s remaining loyal to Eastman’s way of life (it did save him after all), but there are always extenuating circumstances, especially in that world, so he needs to start thinking outside the box. I’m not at all surprised it’s Carol who finally notices something’s up, and she wastes no time going to check it out. She and Morgan have been at odds since the attack on Alexandria, and though Carol hasn’t come out and spoken directly against him, I know for a fact she doesn’t trust him and wouldn’t hesitate to take him out if she deemed it necessary. I guess we’ll soon find out if she does.

THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 6’s seventh episode gives us enough to chew on, but saves the choicest morsels for the final moments. Before I get to that, I’m not sure what to make of Father Gabriel’s prayer time, or the fact that Rick had no problem ripping down the signs he was putting up…right in front of him. I laughed, but I also shook my head. The exchange between Rosita and Eugene was equally ridiculous in a ‘been there, done that’ sort of way. We get it, Eugene is a useless coward. There was a moment he was up for redemption, but I guess it didn’t stick. Okay, so let’s talk about the ending. The episode was littered with three of four shots of a building coming apart, but with Rick playing Toolman Tim, it was hard to determine what was truly going on. Now we know, and it’s sure as hell not a good thing. So much for Rick’s idea of having lots of time to think this situation through, and something tells me Alexandria won’t be around for those upgrades Deanna’s planning.

ZOMBIE KILL OF THE WEEK: There wasn’t a lot of epic killing going on, but I have to say Enid’s getting pretty good with that tiny knife of hers. Look out turtles, she’s not taking prisoners.

BLOOD AND GORE: We revisit Glenn’s gory near death experience, there are a few head shots and some knife sticking, but all in all, it’s a little tame on the gore tonight.

COOLEST SCENE: For me, the coolest thing about tonight was seeing Carol open that door and confront Morgan about keeping someone prisoner. I can’t wait to see how that situation pans out.
