Superheroes had better watch their capes and cowls because film and television projects based on video games are on the rise. With Sony's Uncharted and Eli Roth's Borderlands already on the way, it comes as no surprise that a TV series based on Twisted Metal is in the works.
Will Arnett is executive producing the project through his Electric Avenue studio, which comes from an original take on the franchise by Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Cobra Kai’s Michael Jonathan Smith will write the script, which follows a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.
The Twisted Metal TV adaptation hails from Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions, the same team looking to bring Sony and Naughty Dog's The Last of Us to HBO. Meanwhile, Marc Forman and Peter Principato/Artists First, Smith, Reese, Wernick, Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan will also executive produce.
A Twisted Metal TV series? I could be down for that, even though I was never an avid player of the video game franchise. My question is this: Do you think this project stands on its own or is this perhaps a part of Sony's plan to relaunch the series with a new game? The thought of a new Twisted Metal running on Playstation 5 hardware does sound appealing, especially during a time when games like Rocket League and Destruction All-Stars are still making money hand over fist.
