Box Office Update: Uncharted & Dog both overperforming

The box office is rolling along over the holiday weekend and while the final results aren’t in, according to Deadline‘s early numbers, both new releases are currently overperforming and exceeding their initial box office tracking.

In proof that not-so-great reviews aren’t hurting its box office performance, Uncharted is exceeding expectations so far this weekend. Initially, the film was tracking towards a $30 million 4-day weekend and now, after its estimated Friday performance, that figure has jumped to a possible $45 million 4-day opening. Studio rivals are even seeing a $50 million 4-day opening for Sony. The studio and Tom Holland now have another franchise in their sights and this also indicates that Tom Holland is a box office draw outside of the Spider-Man franchise.

Moviegoers seem to be enjoying Uncharted more than the critics. The film is 39% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes but the audience score is currently 88% and the film earned a respectable “B+” CinemaScore from opening day audiences. Some films aren’t made for critics and Uncharted is proving that this weekend.

Showcasing an even better “A-” CinemaScore is Channing Tatum’s Dog (which we enjoyed), which is also exceeding initial tracking a bit. The film was looking at a $12 million 4-day weekend and now it looks like it will go $14.4 million or higher. The big pull with Dog is Channing Tatum, a cute dog (naturally) and some pretty solid reviews. The film is 77% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and audiences like it even more at 92%. I also suspect that Dog is going to have solid legs in the weeks ahead so this is a win for the studio and Channing Tatum, who took a break for a few years in between projects
