Universal rebooting The Mummy with Prometheus scribe Jon Spaights

Are we in need of a reboot of THE MUMMY already? According to Universal, cha-ching! Er, I mean, yes!

That’s the story according to Variety. The studio has evidently set Jon Spaights, the co-writer of PROMETHEUS and THE DARKEST HOUR, to scribble the reboot. There’s no plot details available, but presumably Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are not going to return.

“I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with Prometheus: to go back to a franchise’s roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven’t seen before,” said Spaihts.

Sean Daniel, who produced Stephen Sommers’ 1999 version, will produce this one as well. Jeffrey Kirschenbaum is overseeing the project for Universal.

What can I say? Developments like this one aren’t really a surprise anymore… That said, I’m kind of surprised at this development.
